Alison's birthday, computer hitches and "the office"

Since starting work in March it has been an uphill battle to keep up with journal-ling all of my experiences and sorting the dozens of photos I keep taking of hockey matches, jagged mountains and pooping horses with Indian Chiefs riding on them down the main streets of Calgary during Stampede. My plans the past two weeks to significantly update the blog, whilst Laura was away and bombing around the Maritimes and Anne of Green Gables country (PEI) in a rented car were foiled.

My laptop, I think is menopausal. It consistently overheats and shuts off. It also, temperamentally refused the installation of a perfectly licenced program and took itself into early retirement by showing me a blue screen only when I tried to restart. A system restore and at the risk of losing all my photos and subsequent stress and grief, I have coaxed it back into regular working order with original photos and hopefully it will be more communicative. I am proud of this, my self-reliance has increased this year.

Importantly, I have received messages of encouragement and emails from friends over the past month, including even receiving a "Chris has thrown you a sheep" notification from Facebook (thanks Chris) that I haven't yet responded to. Not quite sure why I need an online sheep. Maybe I can knit myself a virtual wool jumper for the coming Autumn. General apologies to all, I have been also working overtime up to 9pm or 12 am (which is good for budget), doing all the gardening (sometimes by torchlight) and chores this summer at my place as my housemate has been away. I am thinking of you all and praying for you each day.

Other general news; work is going well, I am no longer such a curiosity but people here are driving me mad daily by asking when I am leaving (assuming that I am going any minute) or alternatively kindly harrasssing me as to why I don't stay. My response of "You can be blonde and a native English speaker and be deported if you overstay your visa" doesn't seem to have much of an impact. It's nice to be wanted but annoying to be constantly explaining myself. The again, Canadians are odd. They also say "Happy Friday" as the greeting on the last working day of the week and "have a great lunch" when I'm off to get a sandwich.

On the flipside I've noticed that from Australia out of you lot, only my ever-loving Mum has asked me when I'm coming home.... :-)

For the record, leaving Calgary mid-November, arriving Sydney late January.

Finally, my niece Alison turned 11 yrs old this week. Happy Birthday. I am very proud of being Auntie to such a bright and lovely girl and looking forward to becoming better and better friends too as time goes on. Have a great party and know that you never have to grow out of pink, sparkles, giggling and sugar.

We are both thinking of you and praying for you Lisa, all the more as your time in Canada starts drawing to a close.
