Flashback Ottawa- skating the Rideau Canal

Only the Canadians could combine eating fast food with exercise on ice. Take donut mix, squash it flat by accident, hope no-one is looking as you drop it in the deep fryer, cover it with icing sugar and chocolate or lemon or orange, call it a part of a native animal (beavertail) and justify eating it as a nationalistic exercise.

Alternatively say you deserve it because you put on your hat, skates, 14 layers of thermals, coat, gloves, scarf and sunnies... then risked broken limbs or public humiliation (or both) skating across a public canal to get to the beavertail stand.

These shots are of the Rideau canal. It was minus 30 with the wind chill and I was not the only one out there in the middle of the morning. I think I was the only Aussie based on my inept performance to struggle across though.

In Ottawa you can skate from one end of the city centre to the other to get to work. A lot of people do it, which amuses me to no end, having sat on the London Underground at rush hour and on Sydney Ferries across the Harbour first thing in the morning and seen the people on their way to work. Same jobs, different lives. Your choice.
